Review: CD

I confess: one of my favourite countries when it comes to (obscure and / or atmospheric and / or ambient and / or Pagan-oriented) Black Art is, without any doubt, Ukraine. I’ve always been a ‘fan’ (damn, I detest this stupid word) of bands and projects like Drudkh, Nokturnal Mortum, Hate Forest, Lutomysl, Lucifugum, Dub Buk, Semargl, Astrofaes, Munruthel or Winter Depression, amongst many, many others.

The same goes for Blood Of Kingu, consisting of Roman Saenko (of Hate Forest, Drudkh and Dark Ages-fame), Thurios (involved with Drudkh or defunct Astrofaes), Yuri (Definition Sane, Thunderkraft, Astrofaes, Valhalla etc) and Krechet (known from his session collaboration with Astrofaes and Drudkh). The band was formed in 2005 and debuted two years later on with De Occulta Philosophia. This successor was recorded in autumn 2009 at ViTeR Music (Kharkiv, Ukraine) and will now be released through major UK-based label Candlelight Records.

After a short intro, Sun In The House Of The Scorpion explodes with what we’re used to: fast, rhythmic and energetic Black Metal with a rough production and a grim, darkened approach. The mostly intensive tracks have everything you need to come to a sonic orgasm: the riffs and rhythm section, vocals, as well as the atmosphere and lyrical approach (both latter dealing with ancient mythology, demonology, shamanism and astronomy, especially based on ancient Egypt and the Middle-East). It all reflects Nature and the worship of ancient cults, searching for knowledge and purification of human being. Lovely, isn’t it? The raw approach of such subjects is rather grim and oppressing, yet the overwhelming conviction lifts the whole up to the highest level of Dark Art.

Of course several of the members’ other projects may be comparable to Blood Of Kingu’s musical approach, and the quality is as high as most of these other bands/ projects. FYI: the album ends with the Beherit cover “Gate Of Nanna”, and it doesn’t happen that much, yet the cover equals, or even exceeds the original?...
