Band: Nefarium Ad Discipulum is the third full length by Swedish formation Nefarium. Oops, I mean Nefarium are an Italian horde! Both Praesidium and Haeretichristus (this one is still available on the site – for review: see update March 25th 2008) stood for fast and godless Black Metal with an enormous Swedish approach, genre Dark Funeral / Blodsrit / Thy Primordial. And as a matter of fact, Ad Discipulum continues that path. The album, with a total running time of 35:20 minutes, was recorded by Carnifex (v, g; lyrics), Adventor (g; music), Garghuf (d) and Vexator (b) at the Omega Gates Studio during last winter, and it was mixed at Sonic Train Studio by, beware… Andy LaRocque. Swedish, you said?... Ad Discipulum is a concept about, indeed, disciples of the Holy Side, or not, and like both former full lengths, this one stands for grim, blasting and blasphemous melodies, yet with a sound that exceeds the ‘average Swedish’ one. Of course bands as Dark Funeral, Marduk, Valkyrja, Dissection, Thy Primordial and Setherial have been of influence again. There’s no doubt about that. Yet I do also detect ‘wider’ elements this time in the vein of, for example, earlier Keep Of Kalessin (not like this Norwegian band’s latest try-outs), Belphegor or the first 1349-records. The album, by the way, comes with guest guitars (on two songs, Tongue Of The First Pope and Shepherd For Dead Lambs) by Archaon of 1349 (and Funeral/ Antaeos)-fame. Nefarium’s blackened blasphemy and terror does not reach the high level of higher mentioned bands, yet like both former albums, this one is much better than most stuff we get from Italy lately (with a few undeniable exceptions, of course). And this Swedish -oops, I did it again- sorry, Italian band has not been formed to bore, believe me! Oh yes, finally this: Nefarium’s tribute to our good friend and über-messiah Jesus Christ called The Bastard Son Of Satan comes with guest vocals of Mortuary Drape’s Wildness Perversion. 81/100 Ivan Tibos. |
