Review: CD

Trumpet Of Triumph is the third official studio recording by Godless Rising, a band with e.g. Toby Knapp (Onward, ex-Darken, Knapp) as new guitar player, and ex-Vital Remains vocalist Jeff Gruslin. The album lasts for about forty five minutes (eleven titles) and it isn’t meant to glorify our Christian brodderz and sisterz.

Trumpet Of Triumph opens with "Where Is Your God" and this song shows the music(k)al direction. It all stands for a form of raging, pounding Death Metal with old style Speed Metal elements, links to primitive and no-nonsense Thrash Metal and lots of (US)BM-influences. And this goes for most of the tracks: a blaspheme and energetic symbiosis of Death, Black, Speed and Thrash Metal, especially old school-oriented, melodic yet harsh and intense at the same time, and with a tempo that varies from mid-fast to almost blasting. The accentuation differs between these styles, even though the key point is Godless Rising’s blasphemy in both its lyrical and compositional definition. The disappointment: the complete lack of originality, in spite of the characterising sound and approach. I’m glad to notice Godless Rising do play with conviction and craftsmanship, and to hear that all songs have excellent structures and a perfect equilibrium between the details, but a few times it sounds too predictable, I’m afraid.

Finally: Moribund used to be one of my favourite labels from the USA during the nineties (think Judas Iscariot, Darkness Enshroud, Thy Infernal, Windham Hell, Demonic Christ etc). They’ve never been inactive, yet as from last year on, a new boost seems to lift the label up again to a high, well-deserved position within the international Black / Death-scene. Praise! Hail!
