Almost 4 years in between albums may seem like a long time, but the guys of million-album-selling act Godsmack did not let that time go by idly! First of all, there was the touring for their 4th album (aptly titled Godsmack IV, review by former colleague Trik posted 17/07/2006) and the celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the band during 2006 and much of 2007...and then they went on the first real break since the conception of the band...to “recharge the batteries”. To tie over the long resting period, the band's record company released a greatest hits album entitled Good Times, Bad Times...Ten Years Of Godsmack (which included a cover of the led zeppelin song) in December 2007.

The band announced their reformation to start writing and recording a new album in November of 2008, and during Summer 2009 they toured as support to Motley Crüe's Crue Fest 2 tour, and they released a non-album single titled “Whiskey Hangover” to go with the tour. After that, they entered pre-production of the album, with frontman Sully Erna stating, “...as far ad the whole record goes, I think it's going to be a lot more in-your-face. I don't think there's going to be any “Voodoo” or “Serenity” on this one. We decided to go balls out...”!

And that's exactly what the 10 tracks on this album provide the listener with: full-on, straight in-your-face catchy and groovy Modern Melodic Rock/ Metal of the type we've come to know of them. In other words, reminiscences to both Alice In Chains and Metallica (mostly due, or thanks to, to Erna's vocal stylings) flying over the board, but still very much and unmistakably Godsmack! Find a full version of the album opening “Cryin' Like A Bitch” at the band's own website (www.) godsmack.com. For 30-second samples of two more songs, revert to myspace.com/godsmack. You might just as well look up the album's page at either of the trusted online sales websites (iTunes, Amazon, …) because they most certainly will give you samples of the rest of the songs as well! At the moment the band is touring North America with support bands Drowning Pool and Five Finger Death Punch. No info has been released yet about a possible European tour.

If this review is a bit short, as compared to my usual style, I need to say that has a lot to do with the little info I was able to find (the band's artist page on their label's site got stuck 4 years ago, so it seems). Still, whom has nót been idle the last couple of years, is Sully Erna, whom released his debut solo album (on which he'd been working for the past two years) Avalon at the beginning of this September month of last. More info on that at (www.) sullyerna.com. Meanwhile, the new Godsmack...
