Band : Deadline Following the release of their previous album, 2008’s We’re Taking Over (review posted 25/03 of that year), England’s premium female-fronted Punk Rock act Deadline have been very active on the European live circuit…not only playing at several festivals, but also putting in quite a few tours, both in the UK ànd Europe. 2009 was special for the band, in that it saw the release of DL’s first ever DVD (nót sent out to us for promo). On November 10, 2009 DL started a new page (myspace.com/deadlinenewalbum) to keep the fans informed of the band’s progress with the making of their 6th studio album. With Liz taking things in control when it comes to the writing of the new songs, we find she’s gone for an occasional Pop Punk approach on top of the band’s usual Street Punk sound. Still, I don’t think the band’s more Street Punk geared fans will be throwing any “Wimp out!” shouts at the band pretty soon! Well, if the Pop Punk mention has made you frown your eyebrows, just check out the two songs off the album the band posted at myspace.com/deadlineuk! An additional surprise may come in the form of the band covering the Nancy Sinatra hit song “These Boots Are Made For Walking”. Personally, I think it’s a valiant and courageaous try, but I also feel Liz’ voice don’t come through powerful enough here! Still, instrumentally the track simply sizzles! In fact, it is the most exciting track on the album in my point of view…but that may be the recognition factor, of course. Another surprize may be the acoustic ballad “Thorn in My Side” (where Liz does her own backing vocals and, as on a couple of other songs on the album, leaves room for female gig attenders to be invited onto stage for some guest vocalling! Futhermore…am I just imagining that the band’s new lead guitarist may be adding an occasional Country flavouring through some slide guitar-type playing? With 13 songs on the album, the album’s over in only 36 ½ minutes…but then that’s what we expect! 83/100 Tony. |
