Band : Athorn As far as the music on this CD is considered, I consider this a good album, especially for a debut album. Alas, the vocals are what makes me conclude that this will not be an album that will easily find its way back to my CD player. I’ll try to explain my point of view. As far as vocals are considered, I like them to be clean, well sung. Bands which rely on a lot of grunts an howls are to be closer looked at. Are the grunts and growls really necessary, or do they add an extra to the song? Not in this case I’m afraid! The vocalist Carsten Frank is gifted with a fine voice, somehow sounding like a mix of Matt Barlow (Iced Earth) with Björn ‘Speed’ Strid (Soilwork) and Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates), and he shows that he can sing for most of the times, I really don’t like the grunting. If they left out these grunts, the album would be excellent, since, as I’ve mentioned before, musically there’s nothing wrong with these songs, showing that the various group members were influenced by diverse styles of metal, blending them together one way or another to create Athorn’s sound. Especially the guitar work on some of the songs is really superb, creating what seems to be like layers of music. 76/100 Erik Morren. |
