German metal monsters Gamma Ray are back. For more than 20 years they‘ve giving the best of them self and still they seem to find the spirit to go on. Surprising, because besides the success they also had there problems to deal with. Their last album Land Of The Free Part 2 was very successful but their record company, SPV went almost bankrupt so a lot of the money they earned was blown up in the air. But main man Kai Hansen has had much worse things happening to him in the past. So he and his friends went hard at work to get some new songs and look, here they are. To The Metal is a classic heavy metal record and the people at Ear Music knew that this was something for them. Ten classics are fired at will and it covers everything from heavy rockers like "Rise" to ballads like "No Need To Cry", bombastic compositions such as "Empathy" and stomping scream along heavy metal as demonstrated on the title track. This time around they also have a guest swinging by on "All You Need To Know". Nothing special but if the guest goes by the name of Michael Kiske it jumps out to all the other songs. Both Kiske and Hansen have been out of Helloween for many years but if you hear this song it sounds like this is a classic Helloween song that they forgot to put on one of the Keeper Of The Seven Keys-records. It makes that To The Metal is one of those records you must have. Gamma Ray shows with this cd that they still have the right to play on every major festival and hopefully they can stand tall in these times of financial difficulties that musicians all over the world have to deal with.
