Although Alesana is a Post-Hardcore band from North Carolina, the band's members first began playing together in Baltimore, Maryland, and the band was officially formed in October 2004 by Shawn Milke, Patrick Thompson, Dennis Lee, Steven Tomany and Daniel Magnuson and have already three albums under their belt.
At first this may seem like an ordinary Post-Hardcore band like there are so many these days, these guys have the advantage that they like to try things out. The four vocalists, Dennis, Shawn, Jake and Shane trade off vocals and sometimes call in an additional third guitar player and tends to have dual guitar riffs, or use one lead guitar, while the other(s) play chords and octaves. What is normal when you play Iron Maiden but not in this genre.
Although I really enjoyed the album with its diversity (that sets it apart from others in that specific scene) and the way that they build up their songs, there was one thing that I really couldn’t appreciate. They have the advantage of four vocalist, but they all sound like they come out of The Lord Of The Rings. One guy sounds like a Sméagol, and another guy sounds like an elf and the other two also came right out of the book/ movie.
But besides that, if you can ignore that, you got yourself a nice piece of music here.
74/100
