Review: CD

The Greek formation Elysion was formed by Johnny Zero, and soon, after he found some talented musicians and a splendid singer, he recorded a first demo. This demo was immediately elected as ‘demo of the month’ in the German issue of Metal Hammer (the magazine), which was the beginning of an international breakthrough for the band. The band played live with bands as The Gathering, Diary Of Dreams and Christian Death, and in 2008 they entered the ARTemis Studio with producer / mixer Mark Adrian (e.g. Nightfall) to record their debut full length, soon after followed by signing to major Massacre Records.

The result is Silent Scr3am, a forty four-minutes epos that combines different musical styles into one specific symbiosis. Main style might be Dark / Gothic Metal (I won’t use the terminology ‘female fronted Metal’ because this definition is too ‘flat’), because of the combination aggression-emotion. Yet also alternative Rock, Electro-Pop and Goth-Rock do influence Elysion’s musical and lyrical approach. The songs vary from slow, semi-acoustic and somewhat sweet over mid-tempo and rhythmic to firm and rocking. I need to mention the strength and warmth of vocalist Christianna (who, by the way, joined the stage as guest singer for Moonspell at the Rock ‘em All Festival in July 2008, by the way), which is the best element within the band.

Recommended to fans of poppy Dark / Gothic Metal / Rock as well as European Female Fronted Metal (so, I’ve said it!). Mastered by Ted Jensen (Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, Behemoth, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, yet also Madonna!).

70/100
