Band: Slayer Unless you have been living under a rock or without TV, radio or internet for the last 30 or more years you probably have heard of Slayer. Even if you go to a concert People scream this band name until they lose their voice (even if it’s not a Slayer concert). For the people who really lived under a rock, Slayer is one of the defenders of extreme metal since the beginning in the 80’s. Since that time Kerry King, Tom Araya, Jeff Hanneman and Dave Lombardo (who took a break but rejoined the band) have been touring, trashing and have gotten accused more times than anybody for their extreme lyrics. Especially for the infamous song "Angel Of Death". I got my hands on a limited edition with a DVD so before I turned my attention to the album I popped the dvd in my computer. The result was Playing with dolls. A 20 minute movie about a guy who’s mom got killed when he was young and turns into a serial killer who takes peaces of every (female) body to recreate his mom. To make it more psychotic, slayer provided the music with songs from their new album. Now there are 2 kinds of people. You got people who love slayer or just hate them because all their songs sound the same (of course they all sound the same, their all brutal). Well I’ve got good news for both of them. You will recognize the typical, flawless slayer rhythm and solo sections that makes you jealous and makes your jaw drops, but the guys have learned from The Christ illusion album and finally dare to put some new elements in their style but are one of the few who can stick faithful to their roots and sound. In my opinion, this is their bast album since reign in blood, not because of the extreme music, but due to the new elements. 92/100 Jeroen. |
