Band : Whiplash Unborn Again is the sixth full length album from the old US thrash threesome Whiplash. The band had its debut in 1985 with the album Power and Pain and now here in 2009 they're ‘unborn again’. The songs are guitar driven and rely on a tight rhythm section, gut-wrenching riffs and Tony Portaro’s rough, but awkward voice. The production is excellent, with every instrument audible. It isn't too polished and underlines the feel of the album well. While listening I find myself wishing for a little more variety between the songs as well as some more captivating melodies, but “Feeding frenzy”, “Snuff” and “Float face down” are fantastic thrashers and convince me to hunt down the older albums. Portaro’s guitar sometimes is Nugent-ish-roaring and the swampy bluesy themes on “Parade of two legs” and “Firewater” are laid on thick. My final judgment of this album must be that it has some really great moments, and some unfortunate ones (“Hook in mouth” and “Fight or flight”). If you like the former Whiplash albums, or if you're a fan of Artillery, Anthrax and Annihilator there is a good chance you might like this album. A good return to form for Tony Portaro and Co and hopefully not their last! 85/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
