Band : Avantasia I've always been a great fan of Tobias Sammet, both for his work with his band Edguy, as well as for his Avantasia project. I thought that after a few CD's with Avantasia he would have run out of inspiration, but this is very far from the truth it seems, since this new release from Avantasia is not just one, but two CD's at the same time. And once again he's used some of Rock's or Metal's best vocalists. To name but a few: Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Michael Kiske, Russel Allen, and believe me, the list is not finished yet. Even Klaus Meine has joined him on one song, and of course Tobias also takes part in the singing. I cannot decide which of the two CD's I prefer, as they're both equally good. Stunning vocal performances, a rock hard rythm section and some scorching guitar solo's. What more do you need to bang your head of. What's so good about Avantasia albums is that they're very varied. This has of course to do with the many vocalists, who all have their strong points, but also musically. This is proven once again by these two CD's. Whereas The Wicked Symphony shows us the heavier side of Tobias, Angels of Babylon is more varied, ranging in styles from Classic Hard Rock over Epic Metal to Power Metal. This is in fact the follow up of the Scarecrow album, but if I've heard it right Angels Of Babylon is sort of a prequel to the 'Scarecrow album, and The Wicked Symphony is the sequel to the Scarecrow. My conclusion : an album that will be played time and time again, not just by Avantasia fans, but by all out there who like some decent, well written and well performed metal. So go out and buy these albums immediately. 98/100 Erik Morren. |
