FM sadly more or less silently disappeared halfway the nineties. In 2007 they had a one-off reunion to play on the Firefest festival, and apparently this reignited the spark, which meant they started playing together again.

Metropolis is their first studio album after their reuniting, and, although neither Andy Barnett nor Chris Overland are in the band, a nice piece of work they've made of it. It's as if we're going back in time listening to this album. Great that they've not tried to change their musical orientation, but stayed true to their roots. The trademark of the band is still there, and that's Steve Overland, who's got a very recognizable voice that's very pleasant to listen to. Bluesy, yet not too bluesy, the right voice for this kind of music. As far as the songs themselves are concerned, they are a continuation of the previous work FM brought out. Nice melodies, decent guitar work, and crystal clear vocals.  The opening title "Wildside" immediately kicks in the door, and is, strangely enough, followed by a totally different kind of song. Whereas "Wildside" has some sort of chopping guitar sound, "Hollow" is far more melodious with a more subdued guitar sound. I could continue song per song, but time's lacking. Let's just say that this album has an ideal mix between strong rock songs, softer rock songs, and ballads. To me the best tracks on this album are the opening track "Wildside", "Unbreakable" and finally "Who'll Stop The Rain", a track that could have easily made it into the charts in the eighthies.

A very good comeback effort, and an album that might end up with my favourite 2010 albums.
