Band : Reaper Reaper exist since 25 years, yet just like with Treat, this is only their sixth studio album. Like many other German bands, they keep on playing traditional, eighthies style metal. Not being a great fan of this kind of bands, I wasn't too keen to review this album. I expected some outdated Metal lacking all originality. In some way this indeed was the case, meaning you'd all heard it before somewhere, but it wasn't bad. Especially the vocalist Daniel Zimmerman has a very powerful voice, at times he even reminds me of Udo Dirkschneider. And contrary to other old school German Bands, like Grave Digger for instance, they have some songs I do like a lot. What strikes me is that more and more German bands start to include a track on their albums, sung in their native language. Not a problem for me, but I doubt there are lots of fans in other European countries except Germany that is, who understand what they're singing about. As a matter of fact, I found that the songs were rather varied in style. OK, it's Metal, but with subtle differences. For instance the last track, "Light Of Anger", has a lot of Black Sabbath influences. Not really my cup of tea, at least not for every-day use, but quite interesting. Sadly I do think this album is not enough to lift them out of the underground scene, but hey, if they don't mind who am I to complain. 65/100 Erik Morren. |
