Band : Serpentine The second album in under 3 months featuring Tony Mills on vocals, and it's just my luck cause I have to review it. Since I also reviewed the other album he sang on, State Of Rock, I was a bit afraid that I might make the same remark as I did for the State Of Rock album, that he's not a bad vocalist, but that after a few songs I personally find it to get a bit boring, because he's got such a high pitched voice. Of course he can't change his voice, so I still get a bit bored after a while, but contrary to the State Of Rock album, here the music makes up for a lot. Harmonious, with great keyboards, it's good stuff. The origins of the band go back to 2007, when Gareth David Noon (keyboards), Christopher Gould (guitars) and Gareth Van Stone (bass) joined forces to form Serpentine. They were later joined by American vocalist Greg Flores. However, working with a US based singer proved difficult, so they started searching for a next vocalist, which they found in Tony Mills. Finally they were joined by John Clews, also on guitars, and by Charlie Skeggs on drums. It is in this line-up that they produced this record. Musically I hear a lot of different influences, like Journey, Survivor, to name but two. Overall it's an album that goes more towards AOR than Hard Rock, and there are some tracks with more balls, but the majority tends towards the more harmonious, softer rock genre. By listening to this CD four or five tracks at a time, and then switching to another CD, I managed to not get bored by the vocal performances of Tony. 67/100 Erik Morren. |
