Mojobone is the name of a an exciting project featuring all around instrumentalist Per Wiberg  (Opeth, Spiritual Beggars) and drummer Marcus Kallstrom, that releases their third album Cowboy Mode on the label Hippodome Music. Cowboy Mode is 10 well penned rocking tunes with emphasis on hooks, melody and soul. This duo rocks out when appropriate, lean backs into a melancholic atmosphere and just rips off fantastic tunes with the exactly right attitude This duo is inspired by the good old days when song writing was the most important ingredient for making an album. When I first heard this band I thought I heard tens of hints and references to several bands of the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, but Mojobone is now and they fashioned their sound out of these influences.

“Over The Hill” starts out the CD in full balls-out mode. “Damaged Gods” with Michael Ammott on lead guitar and “The Peacemakers” combine stoner rock influences with the classic 70’s blues/psych sound, and add a couple of neat grunge twists in there as well. Slower tunes like the unforgettable “Shadow king” and the title trackhave a trance-like quality providing this disc with subtle diversity. “Shadow king” is just so very beautiful, especially when the vocal harmonies by Per and Ana Sofi Dahlberg (Anekdoten) come in.”Celebrate Armageddon” is a funky Herbie Hancock meets Kiss shocker with a chorus that will pull you in. Another recommendable track is “End of music, end of story” which is a 9-minute mid-tempo track with a blazing sax solo by Gustav Nygren.

Powerful and absorbing stuff from another fine Scandinavian export.
