Review: CD

I don’t get the fuzz about the German formation Krypteria, with South-Korean singer Ji-In Cho. Or better: I wonder why this band gets so much (positive) attention. Did you know, for example, that they created the national hymn for South Korea for the last World Cup Sucker, sorry, Soccer?
All right, there are several surpluses. Ji-In Cho has a great voice. She is able to sing in different heights without exaggerating, or without overdoing herself. Besides, there’s a lot of variety between the different songs. Sometimes, a few riffs (like the opening riffs of Ignition, or The Freak In Me), or certain (short) parts (intros or intermezzos) are rather interesting, in case you ignore the predictability of it. And the sound / production too is marvellous: powerful yet integer at the same time.
However, My Fatal Kiss is built upon all possible Goth Metal clichés – choirs, piano, tempo-changes that have been done a thousand times before, the interaction between emotions and power, some electronic or acoustic elements, etc. Only the additional grunts are absent??? It’s a sad evolution lately, especially within the German scene, I’m afraid – think about last month’s Voices Of Destiny-release From The Ashes (review also available this week) amongst too many others.
All right, in comparison to that VOD-mistake, this catchy album is much stronger, much more mature, and consisting of more interesting parts, that’s for sure. And it does not bore me whole the time either. Yet after a while, I’ve heard it. I don’t get thrilled that much, on the contrary.
And those silly lyrics… No further comment…
For fans of, let’s say, Nightwish, After Forever, Lacuna Coil and Tystnaden.

70/100
