Band : Mörser Would a young scolar get the task of filling 2 pages with the history of German Death Metal/ Grindcore act Mörser, he would have a very difficult assignment indeed, for although the band has been around since 1996, its 7 members are also self-confessed lazy asses! Something which not only reflects in the band’s sparce amount of releases, but also in the way they unleach info on the outside world. Their last release was 2006’s Pure Scum, actually a compilation of the sold-out 2002 5-track Scum mini-album, with the addition of 5 new songs (review, in which I made my own attempt at a decent Mörser hi-story, posted 08/11/2006 – is still available for your factfinding needs), meaning it took the band another 4 years to write a new album’s worth of material! Meanwhile I found out that at least sóme of the members are not thàt lazy after all, and you’ll find bassist Matthias“Matze” Trenne also plays with Jawa The Band, while drummer André Wendelken and guitarist Sven “Svenion” Nienaberare still active with Minion (the latter also having a tenure with Dogs On Catwalk). Also, there’s been some changes in the line-up over the last couple of years. Firstly a second guitarist was added (also from Minion), whom left, and was subsequently replaced by Sven Seelkopf, whom before handled the band’s “rhythm bass”. Also, Mörser has returned to their 3-way vocal attack of old, by recruiting a third singer named Chaco(from the bands Keitzer, Androphagous and Sandokhan). It speaks for the linearity in the band members’ toughts about what their music should sound like, that the line-up changes in no significant way altered Mörser’s musical direction! After all, Seelkopf already played his bass in a way to resemble rhythm guitar…but admittingly the overall sound is more and more in-sinc these days! Far from following in current-day’s hype of Metalcore in Germany, Mörser remain one of the few (if not the only) bands to keep the AcMe sound-flag high! AcMe? Well yeah, that was a musical sub-genre which existed from the late ‘90s to early new millenium, was found (with only a few exceptions) in and around Bremen, Germany, took the best elements from late ‘80s Metalcore (a mixture of up-tempo Death Metal with some Hardcore attitude) shaken up with a nice extra dosis of Melodic Grind, and was almost exclusively limited to releases on the outstanding label Per Koro (due to the musical climate in those days, that label was the only to dare and be different). Check out the songs (only 4, off an equal amount of releases) posted at myspace.com/moerser1995 (don’t bother to check morser.de, you’ll only be re-directed to the band’s MySpace page!) if you think you’re up to it! But be warned…this music is highly addictive, and since Mörser ain’t none too active in bringing out new stuff… Let’s just hope their singing to Bastardized Recordings brings a change to that! Here’s for a nomination (actually an already secured spot) into that “Best Extreme Metal Albums Of 2010”-list of mine! 98/100 Tony. |
