Band : Triptykon Triptykon is the most recent musical project of Thomas Gabriel Fischer, founding member of the pioneering Hellhammer/Celtic Frost bands Years after Celtic Frost’s first disbandment in the mid nineties, founding members vocalist/guitarist Thomas Gabriel Warrior Fischer and bassist Martin Ain returned in 2005 with only one album Monotheist before yet another shuffle occurred. The future seemed bright for them indeed, with doom/thrash/death enjoying a revival in this decade and the name Celtic Frost along with it. But Warrior walked away from the reunion, leaving fans disappointed and no doubt bewildered, effectively closing the books on Celtic Frost, and formed Triptykon. Despite all his troubles, the chemistry of this band is instantly obvious, and once Triptykon’s first echoing hellish intonations and the first opening line ‘Satan, Saviour, Father, Lord, Constructor of my World’ enter , “Goetta” becomes a clear favourite for the year’s best openers. From the first moments of “Goetta” you know that Warrior’s raging growls have aged well and still know how to retain the exciting vibe of his 80s work without being derivative. While still chock-full of epic distorted destruction, the second epic “Abyss within my soul” also dwells within a truly dark environment. “A thousand lies” is a simple devastating and beautifully executed barrage of hyper-thrash metal with a death feel. The undercurrent of unease is ever-present, even during the melancholic “In shrouds decayed” and the Ulver-tinged “My pain”. The ferocious and nihilistic doom metal is well-in-place on Eparistera Daimones., although the atmospherics and production on the 20 minute “The prolonging” are considerably more despairing in approach. This isn’t an album you put on if you just want to have a good time or to just chill out. This is something you listen to if you want to be taken to the darkest pitts of hell.. If you ever liked Celtic Frost and especially Monotheism at any point in your life, do yourself a favour and check out Triptykon. 92/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
