Band : Angra This Brazilian band is around now for almost 20 years and not without any success. After a 4 year hiatus the strike back with a new effort called ‘Aqua’. After reading the accompanying biography we learn that this album had a central theme: Water. Sound promising but after listening to this new work we’re not that impressed after 4 years waiting. But let’s not forget that all this was done by talented musicians. We’re under the impression that now, even more than in the past, everything is evolving more into the direction of prog rock rather that plane and simple power metal. To bad it sounds a bit boring now and then. A song like ‘Weakness Of A Man’ comes across like one big yawn. The oriental touch on ‘Spirit Of The Air’ sounds like it’s done because its cool these days to incorporate stuff like that. On the other hand we can’t give this album a low score. If you take your time for this album you’ll realize that all the tracks are worked out into the smallest detail. A big hurray goes out to the fact the did not make ant epic songs that last 10 minutes or, God forbid, even longer. This will not be our album of the week but we’re sure all the die hard fans will be more that satisfied with this nu chapter in long Angra history. 75/100 Stef Maes. |
