Charly Sahona is a name I had never heard of before. After a bit of searching around on the web I found out he's the guitarist in Frenc metal band Venturia - again unknown to me, which is not so unusual, as I'm more in the AOR/Hard rock scene.
So it's without prejudice that I started listening to this album. Now having read that Venturia was, or is a prog metal band, I expected this to be in the same vein. I must admit this album does have it's prog influences, but it also offers other things.
Charly apparently started working on this - his debut solo album in 2008. He not only plays all guitars on this album, but also took care of the keyboards, and even sang all the songs. On drums he got the aid from Diego Rapacchietti, also a Venturia band mate, and yet another Venturia member Thomas James-Potrel played bass.
With a background in progressive metal it's no wonder that the compositions are at times very complex, with different layers, and with lots and lots of keyboards in it. One of the best songs I find is "Forgotten Past" - not surprisingly a song which relies heavily on keyboards.
Now although he's not a bad singer Charly seems to have put some sort of an effect on his voice, a kind of echo or so, and this after a while does start to get boring.
To sum it all up: not a bad debut album at all. Maybe if he leaves out the "voice effect" next time...
