Band : My Brother The Wind Nicklas Barker (Anekdoten), Mathias Danielsson (Makajodama, ex-Gösta Berlings Saga), Ronny Eriksson (Magnolia) and Tomas Eriksson joined forces to please the world with their instrumental mostly improvised work Twilight In The Crystal Cabinet. Which means that there is an agreeable mixture between Agitation Free, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, King Crimson and Djam Karet to be heard. Like another improv band Oresund Space Collective, the compositions rely more on mood and soloing rather than riffs, choruses and melody lines but it is done with such aplomb and vision.From the opening bars of the hypnotic “Karmagrinder” to the closing sound textures of the amazing floating miles out into outer space-guitars drenched “Death and beyond” you will quickly become completely absorbed in the sound of My Brother The Wind and won’t want to get out. Several songs are in the 10 minute plus range such as “ Karmagrinder”, the booming “Electric universe”, “ The mournful howl of dawn” and “Death and beyond” which feature formidable twin lead guitar solos and some very beautiful harmonies. The guitar lines are spacious affairs, threads of swirling, mind boggling and wailing guitar work. The solos weave and dance together carrying forward a sound that is very inviting and serves to suck the listener very deeply into their ‘free ride'-music The playing is reminiscent of many of the more exotic and trippy guitarists of the 70s. The title track is a slow, haunting piece that creep along into the listener's psyche very effectively. “The mournful howl of dawn” is both cosmic and ethereal, it is one of the most gorgeous non-vocal songs you will ever hear this year. These guys quite clearly are very good musicians, and their level of performances is one of the most enjoyable factors when listening to Twilight In The Crystal Cabinet. This record will land in my top 10 at the end of the year 95/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
