Band: Various Artists If mentioning the international Grind-scene, one cannot deny the importance of Scott Hull, one of the most influential producers and musicians within the extreme music worlds. Not only he’s involved with well-known bands as Pig Destroyer, Enemy Soil, Treblinka, Agoraphobic Nosebleed or Anal Cunt; he’s also member of the Relapse-staff and producer / engineer / master for bands as Phobia, Nile, Exhumed, Circle Of Dead Children or Visceral Bleeding amongst many others. And what about Relapse, being (one of) the most important labels when it comes to Grind, Punk, Sludge, Drone, Hardcore?… This second collection from the Kills Fascists-series, intelligently called Volume 2, consists of seventy four tracks by almost twenty bands, clocking seventy eight minutes, all selected by Mister Hull, with one purpose: to lift the underground upwards to the soil. One thing most bands have in common: the nihilistic and non-materialistic simplicity of performance and song writing. No mathematic avant-gardism, no progressive modernism, no, these bands bring purity. And to open the gates to these bands and the scene they stand for, this compilation must bring salvation. Worthful yet diverse explosions featured on this Volume 2 are San Francisco-based Population Reduction, a duo that’s also involved with Insanity (Peter is also part of Vöetsek, by the way – see further) and adding Thrash/ Death elements to a Grind- and Punk-basement; furious, fast, foolish, fierce and filthy yet fabulous and fantastic Psycho-Porn-Grind with Owen Hart; Crom, the only band with just one track on this album, bringing an experimental, horrific and darkening symbiosis of Power-Violence, Grindcore, Sludge and Metal; masterly Power/ Grind/ Crust/ Blast-monsters Idiots Parade; the splendid female-fronted Thrash/ Crossover-band Vöetsek, with Tankcrimes Records-owner Scotty Karate, and known for tens of splits, with bands as, for example, Unholy Grave, Chainsaw, Cold War etc; Septic Surge, one of the most noisy projects on Mother Earth; Apartment 213, with the perfect balance between Grind, Sludge Metal and Punk; Lack Of Interest, with their old school-influenced Punk; Noisear, mixing early Carcass with O.L.D., yet their own (sublime!) way; Social Infestation, some ‘super-formation’ with members of Withered and Mastodon, originally formed in 1995, and bringing no-nonsense and straight-forward Hardcore/ Grind with a social-political message; This Comp Kills Fascists Volume 2 really is a superb collection of lesser known yet often underestimated will and lust. ---/100 Ivan Tibos. |
