Band : Caladmor Caladmor originated in 2001. After a lot of work, the result was some sort of sound which reminded us of gothic and folk metal. Though, that’s what the band says. Because, personally, I think there are few gothic or folk influences to be found on this record. Once again, a band makes the vast mistake to call themselves ‘gothic’ as soon as they have a girl on vocals and to call themselves ‘folk’ as soon as it involves some lyrics about nature. The only think I hear are a lot of black metal influences, but nothing more than that. They say that the common ground of all of their songs is the charismatic voice of front singer Barbara, which builds a stirring contrast to the vocals and growls of drummer Maede. Well, I have no doubts about the vocal qualities of Maede on Midwinter, but Barbara seems to lose it from time to time. When she sings in a classical way, it’s quite ok, but as soon as she starts singing in a casual way, I have my doubts. A very positive fact about Caladmor’s "Midwinter" is the fact that this new album is incredibly catchy. The melodies stick to your mind and they are very recognizable. I’m sure that, with better mastering, with more vocal training and by adding some more folk instruments and creativity, this band might just do much better on their next album. 60/100 Tim Tronckoe. |
