Band : Resistance Belgian Extreme Metal act Resistance was formed in 2004 by bassist Benoit “Ben” Sizaire, starting out as a Metal-influenced Hardcore band. What with new band members coming in along with new influences, Resistance evolved to the Death Metal animal it is today, with only sóme traces left of its Hardcore past. In fact, if any influence outside Death is clearly present at times, it’s Thrash Metal of the extreme kind! Yeah…the guys didn’t get there over one night, though! In the first two years it was hard enough getting shows without an album to back ‘em up, but the band (today consisting of Ben, drummer Sanders Jonas, guitarists Tiborcz Richard & Dris Olivier, and singer Xerus) persevered and managed to get quite a reputation in both Belgium and France before releasing their debut album Trauma, which contained all the right elements as the band members then saw it,in 2006. However, the band’s sound then still underwent a further evolution, not only with an increase in aggression and power, but also by the incorporation of intense melodies. With influences of all things Death, Black, and Extreme Metal, but still with a love for Hardcore (influencial bands at that time being Kataklysm, All Shall Perish, Despised Icon, Machine Head, Heaven Shall Burn and Meshuggah), the guys went about writing and eventually releasing their new album Two Sides Of A Modern World through the Alveranlabel in April 2008. Already there to help the band in the studio: former Channel Zero guitarist Xavier Carion whom, in spite of having developed a disability which prevents him from being exposed to loud music, pending permanent damage, definitely still has an ear for it! Mastered by studio wizard Jacob Hansen, the album generated enough buzz to ensure the band a support slot in the European tour of Brazil’s Death metal legend Sepultura and Death Core act All Shall Perish. The band returned to Jonathas Studios with Carion in September of last year, recording the 10 songs on the album to showcase their further musical evolution. Over the years, the guys have developed a perfect mastering of their instruments, which reveals itself in the very technical play, the musicians’ ability to incorporate melodies, and the band’s aptitude to create the necessary time changes within songs to keep diversity up…securing the possibility that first-time listeners will be able to sit through the complete album without getting headaches or losing their focus from being exposed to constant speeds! If you happened to see the band on the full-European tour they went on in support of Belphegor, Darkest Hour, and Suicidal Angels (hum, sounds like quite a faiirly diverse bill, in terms of Extreme music) during January, I’m sure you may have heard some of the new material already. If not, check it out at myspace.com/resistance666. There’s only 2 new songs off the new album, but there’s a chance to compare with 2 songs off each of its predecessors as well! If that ain’t enough, check out the band in live conditions at one of the dates mentioned at the same page! 90/100 Tony. |
