Band : Kickhunter Yet another - German - band I'd never heard of before. And what a pleasant surprise this was. Just listening to this music and you'd never have guessed this is a German band. The kind of music they play is so un-German. Think Deep Purple mixed with a touch of ZZ Top. This is down to earth pure rock'n'roll. On a few songs I even get the feeling I'm listening to Cheetah. I guess not many of you will have heard of this Australian band who way back in 1981 released an album that was almost impossible to find, but I've been lucky and have been able to buy a rerelease on CD a few years back. Cheetah was a female fronted band, that blew you out of your socks. And this is the same feeling I get with this Kickhunter album, probably because female vocalist Melanie Black sounds almost like a doublers of the Hammond sisters. As I told before, this is straight no-nonsense hard rock, played with a lot of love and great musical skills. It's a perfect mix between ballads (Feels Like Home - which has also lots of southern rock in it, Deep In My Heart), straight up-tempo rockers (check out 'Shy Shy Shy' which starts almost like a Status Quo song, but goes on and could easily have come from the abovementioned Cheetah album). There are also 2 covers on the album, one is a song from Blondie 'Call me' which is performed very well, and also a Victory cover 'Checks In The Mail' -a song on which Victory's guitarist Hermann Frank plays as well. I think I'm going to check out these guys previous two albums as well, or should I wait because I heard they will start recording their next album in January. 86/100 Erik Morren. |
