Review : CD

The German/US collaboration Seamount is a new acquaintance to me and indeed a very nice one and it is refreshing nowadays to come across a sound that is both fresh and familiar at the same time. Influences from power, doom, classic metal and NWOBHM can be seen throughout this album in amazing fashion, the songs chock full of melodic hooks crushed down by a heavy rhythm section, bringing forth one of the best metal releases of 2010.
The medium AC/DC-pace of “the ancient” is extremely thick and has one of those Lizzy-leads that stick in your head long after the song has ended. “Stardust”, “Path to legend” and the title track display Seamount’s ability to craft NWOBHM-pounding riffs, peaking with an all out neck-snapping assault. “Ocean, I will call you” is a melodic down-plodding beast with intricate parts coming and going. Bringing the album to a close is the epic power metal track “Only death shall do us part”, but not to worry as the edge has been kept razor-sharp. With impressive tracks like “Standing in the rain”, “Getting through”, my fave “40,000 fathoms”, or the previously mentioned “The ancient” and “Only death shall do us part”, this is a spirited and diverse release. I will mention Tim Schmidt and Andy Kummer. on guitars who are both brilliant, playing one killer lead after another.  Apart from the great guitar work and the solid bass- and drum work, the unique gloomy vocals by Phil Swanson (Hour Of 13/Upwards Of Endtime ) have some really fantastic melodies.
Sacrifice is quite possibly one of the best metal releases of 2010
