Doom has always been a genre which doesn’t immediately attract many people, because it doesn’t immediately cheer up a lot of people. It’s just when you use doom as a fundament and use influences from black metal, hardcore and even punk to create a sound of your own, that it attracts more people.
Dead Languages is quite a new band in the doom genre. Hailing from the United States they are clearly influenced by Electric Wizard and by oldies in the genre Neurosis.
The first song, "Twenty Twelve", is a preview song for the upcoming 7”, set to be released through Obscenity Cult Records. It’s a down-tempo song which isn’t that interesting really. The second song, "Ancient Astronauts", which is a song of their demo, is far more interesting. It starts with a terrifying growl and then all madness is unleashed. It’s a very fast song, which every punk fan will definitely appreciate. In "On The Brink", you can clearly notice how much emotion is added to the vocals. The voice sounds very depressed, but which is a good thing, don’t get me wrong.
The last song, "This World", is a song for the hardcore-doom fan. Tight drumming, heavy bass, … I think this is the best song on their demo.
Dead Languages has definitely woken up my interest for more of the same. Let the Dead Languages rule the earth again!
