Review: CD

Lönndom are a Swedish duo, consisting of S. Sandström and A. Petterson. Both members were active in, for example, Armagedda (previously called Volkermord) and Lik; the latter (A. Petterson) is involved with Whirling too, a Dark Metal band that recently released its debut Faceless Phenomena on Eisenwald, professionally reviewed by colleague Tony and posted on January 2nd 2011.

The material has nothing to do with Volkermord/ Armagedda at all. On the contrary, Lönndom’s music gets miles away from any (Black) Metal fundament. This goes for both music and lyrics, the latter now dealing with nature and mysticism instead of hate and blasphemy.Lik is a name that might come to mind when listening to Viddernas Tolv Kapitel, of course. From the musical point of view, Lönndom certainly aren’t ‘just a’ continuation on Lik’s past (the Agonia-releases), but the concept is, more or less, the same. The main difference, evidently, is the non-metal approach in Lönndom’s case, in contradiction to Lik’s (note: Lönndom’s earliest efforts were closer related to Lik’s musical approach). The warm, organic songs on Viddernas … all are acoustic, and the whole sounds atmospheric and spiritual, yet at the same time pretty minimalistic and repetitive as well. The addition of samples (nature sounds) gives the whole an even deeper, more profound natural feeling. This plain and sober kind of Folk-inspired intimacy reminds me to some other (acceptable) bands or projects too: Stille Volk, Orplid, Nightsky Bequest, Vàli, Empyrium, Ulver – even Bathory and Halgadom sometimes come to mind.

The album lasts for an hour and this might cause lethal boredom. The hymns are nice, that’s for sure, but sixty minutes, well, that’s rather long to stay focused on listening. This could be a decent recording to play on the back ground while reading some dull biography, but to many this might seem too sweet

65/100
