Band : Pÿlon Doom. Great name for a doom album. For years now Pÿlon are counted among the crème de la crème of European classic doom, but Doom is the first album with which I make contact with this Swiss duo. Technically Pÿlon is a duo, consisting of Matt Brand (Vocals, Guitar) and Jan Thomas (Bass), supported by a cast of session musicians. Like I said classic doom, not too funereal, not too sludgy, not too groovy, but with just the right amount of well placed tempo changes to keep the very flowing compositions really interesting and dynamic, a feat that these guys manage masterfully! The three first songs appeal to me already with the first spin. The tracks constructed between a playing time of 7 to 11 minutes remind me a bit of Count Raven, Candlemass, Revelation, Warning and Planet Gemini stylistically, even though they aren’t quite as heavy and technical. There's an omnipresent, albeit subtle feel of 70s psych and adventurous Black Sabbath in most songs, even the vocal style; Matt Brand sounds nothing like The prince of darkness, but some of his vocal melodies keep reminding me of Ozzy’s early work. Chocked full of elaborate and impressive arrangements, that grip you right from the start, but still manage to reveal intriguing details ensuring a lasting listening delight, that enhances the already high quality level even further. Pÿlon is not just confined to doom, being able to bring progressive and gothic touches, while including a number of sound effects and acoustic parts into their songwriting. The album is on the long side at a little over 77min in playing time, but even though it feels too long, it does so in a good way. The artwork and graphic layout is top notch but next time they have to include a magnifying glass. 90/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
