Review : CD

From the UK come Tesseract with their first full length release striking a balance somewhere between progressive rock and math metal with perhaps the odd piano thrown in for good measure.

Among the eleven songs we can find six, which already had been on the EP Concealing Fate  (“Acceptance” – “Deception” -  “The Impossible” – “Perfection” - “Epiphany” - “Origin”),which also explains why especially the latter sounded so damn familiar and the rest of the songs also fits in, showing that the band has continued to develop musically and shows a lot more maturity. The metal passages partly remind me of Messhugah, Textures, Extol,… while the more progressive parts rather follow the The Mars Volta and even Porcupine Tree, with everything being combined in a very cohesive way. There are a few good moments, some of the riffs are catchy and the musicianship cannot be faulted, although the vocals are really quite atrocious in places.

Well, I’m sorry but the music is just not my cup of tea, the chugga-chugga guitars and the angst-driven vocals don’t amuse me at all.. The album also comes with a bonus dvd that features the entire Concealing Fate 6-song EP performed by the band in the studio recorded in 5.1 and will definitely make more fans of abovementioned bands get this album.
