Review : CD
Well, I was really anxious about the new The Atomic Bitchwax (you gotta love the name)-album.. After listening to it for a few times, a musical gem of highest class is revealed to the patient listener. From the day the great, but less charismatic Finn Ryan replaced the equally great but very different Ed Mundell as their axe hero, The Atomic Bitchwax had been edging away from the underground Captain Beyond meets MC 5 on acid sound of their first trilogy of albums and toward a more accessible, traditionally classic up tempo rock sound. As their latest albums couldn't really convince me 100 per cent, I am positively surprised this time.
The Local Fuzz deserves at least your initial attention for one important reason: It’s a 42 minute non-vocal song and is full of alternating fast and slow sections, with most musical themes getting reprised somewhere along the way. Several parts still give me the same adrenaline rush as when I listened to them for the first time, several weeks ago and I don't see myself getting tired of the album any time soon. The Local Fuzz feels like a song/album that has been stunningly crafted and perfected down to the very last note. Everything fits together and feels right. The Local Fuzz isn't very accessible at the first try, especially due to the complex ferocious leads, electrifying twists and turns and the surprising jazzy and spacey guitar parts, but I will leave the rest for your own discovery. Get the album. Be amazed and entertained.
It’s early but The Local Fuzz already is my contender for riff rock album no1 of 2011.
