It has been a while, but the rockers in Staind are back with a new self-titled album. Strangely, Staind always has been a very catchy band, but they never really managed to become that big here in Europe, as they are considered metal heroes in their home country.
The album kicks off with Eyes Wide Open, a very powerful metal song with a very chorus. The following song, Not Again, immediately makes me think of Alter Bridge, musically and vocally. Even the influence of Nickelback can be heard a bit. If you mention bands such as Alter Bridge and Nickelback, then the conclusion is easily made: this is a typical American rock/metal band having produced a typical rock album. Nevertheless, in the corners of each song, you can hear a more personal Staind touch, which is that Staind always does the opposite of what the listener thinks is about to come: when you expect a fast part, you get a slow part; when you expect a heavy guitar riff, you get a vocal part; and so on.
Staind proves to be that typical nu-metal American band, who isn't that typical anymore. They have proven that the small details can change the entire sound and band's impression. Thumbs ... and horns up, guys !
