Tyr is a folk metal band from the Faroe Islands (somewhere around Norway) and like most folk metal band from that area, Their subject matter revolves almost entirely around old Nordic lore, mythology, and history. Even their name that actually is the name of a Norse war god have they taken from their history/mythology lessons.
Although I never heard of this band before, they have been around since 2002 (with the release of their first album) and have consequently released several albums. Their latest (number 6) is already out some time, but I’ve only got my hands on it recently.
I’m not into folk or Viking metal, but when I listened to it, it didn’t actually sound like that genre. I have heard bands like Amon Amarth, but this band can’t really be compared to that. When you see the album cover, see the names of the song, …. It’s obvious. But when you hear the album this sounds more like something in the genre like Lacuna Coil.
For me that is the best thing about this album, but that’s because the genre isn’t really my cup of thee. But that makes this a great album to get into the genre. Overall not a bad album, but definitely nothing ground breaking.
