Looking for something new and refreshing from Sweden? You might just have found it. Where Stories End is the wonderful follow-up of Darkwater’s debut album. If you lend your ear to this band’s latest songs, you will quickly be enchanted by this masterpiece. What makes Where Stories End so good? That’s a question not that difficult to give an answer to. The melodies are easy to digest, the vocals fit in with the varied music and you just hear that this is not any easily made up example of heavy metal excellence. On this new album of Darkwater, we can even hear some industrial influences and if you have to name one of the band’s biggest influences, Kamelot would definitely be one of them. On Where Stories End, we get to hear a whole range of instruments, from the obvious guitar, drums and keys to more classical instruments such as the violin.
It has been a while since I’ve really discovered such a new promising band like Darkwater. Songs as Why I bleed and Queen of the Night are amazingly convincing and varied and show once again what adding a small choir to the background may do to one’s music. It’s definitely for the better.
Despite their great music, I have to admit that Darkwater attempts to become the new Dream Theater or Kamelot, but I think they will never really succeed. It goes without saying that they still have a long way to go, especially when it comes to developing a unique sound. However, they’re on the good way and these guys are still far ahead of the average debuting heavy metal band.
