Review : CD
For those people who crave for some tiny background details about this French unit, 3 of the members also used to play in Pneu, Room204 and Kommandant Cobra.
One listen through this album and it’s clear that Papaye reside firmly in the noisy unorthodox side and this trio’s scolding release is a relentless ride laden with dissonant guitars, odd signature rhythms and the kind of percussion that can only come from a mentally deranged individual. These 12 outbursts (2-3 min)are shorter than average songs, not giving the band lots of time to stretch their instrumental wings, but they prove that they certainly know what they’re doing but unfortunately none of the songs really connects or hits hard enough to leave a lasting impression. I really don’t know what else to say about this album other than it didn’t connect with me in any way.
If you are seeking another instrumental band in the vein of Big Black, Deer Hoof, Don Caballero, US Maple, ect…Papaye is the pick of the month.
