Band: Deceased After a more-than-five-year silence, Virginia-based Deceased (one of the hundreds of bands with the very same moniker – but this one might be (one of the) oldest ones with this name, since being summoned in 1985!) return with Surreal Overdose, which lasts for about forty four minutes. This time, founding member King Fowley (also in acts like Doomstone or October 13) returned to the drum kit (King still takes care of the main vocals as well, of course), and again he did take care of the production too (with Kevin Gutierrez engineering the album at his Assembly Line Studio). The album: magnificent. That’s it. Now the score… No, seriously, I don’t feel like writing a review on this new Deceased-album for being afraid to fudge with cliché-descriptions like ‘old school’, ‘ultra-brutal’, ‘groovy and catchy’, ‘powerful and unstoppable’ and ‘an own sound’. Or what about ‘even stronger than before’ and ‘the best thing Deceased did yet’. Maybe I’ll mention the perfect interaction between the individual members, as well as their skilled experience. And I cannot forget to mention the variation in tempo and the technical craftsmanship, can I. The great surreal artwork? The monstrous production / sound and the superb mix (excellent!)? The uniqueness? The few slightly jazzy-progressive additions? The scarifying atmosphere? The headbang-mentality and the rocking vibe? The very subtle and modest injection of samples and electronic experiments? And probably I’ll call it ‘murderous Death Metal with a thrashy edge’… So, this album: magnificent. That’s it. Now the score… 90/100 Ivan Tibos. |
