Review: CD

Denial Fiend were formed in 2007 and soon the band signed to Ibex Moon Records. 2008 saw the light of the debut album, They Rise, and Denial Fiend toured across Europe and North America. Then the band took a short break to think about the future, and finally two remaining members, Terry Butler (b) of Massacre/ Deat / Obituary/ Six Feet Under-fame and Down By Law/ The SpearsSam Williams (g), recruited two new members, drummer Rob Rampy (also in The Spears, and especially known from D.R.I.) and Blaine Cook (v) from The Accused or The Fartz. With this line-up, Denial Fiend recorded the sophomore album, unfortunately just clocking half an hour.

Blaine’s vocals do give an own approach to the crossover between Tampa-inspired Death Metal and punkish Hardcore. I can’t always appreciate them, yet one cannot deny the diversifying strength of his voice for sure. And this variation in vocal approach fits to the musical one, which is as varying. Of course all members’ other bands are of influence. Especially Terry’s experience at the top of the American Death Metal scene for three decades reflects in the song writing and many structures. Death Metal, the Old School Florida-kind, is of undeniable importance, of course. Yet Denial Fiend do inject masses of elements from other genres as well. More than before, the Thrash-injected parts take over the battle, and all this gets spiced with Punk / Hardcore, as mentioned before, and Traditional Metal in general. A surplus for sure is the variation between the songs, for being some kind of surprise each time again. Just experience… It’s tight, it’s heavy, it’s bloody Booze ‘n’ Babes Rock ‘n’ Roll!

With guest appearances of Ralph Santolla (Death, Deicide, Obituary, Iced Earth etc.), James Murphy (Death, Obituary, Testament, …) and Steve Swanson (Massacre, Six Feet Under).

70/100
