Saltatio Mortis might not be all that well-known outside of Germany, in their home country they are one of the most popular and funny-looking Metal bands. They define themselves as Medieval Rock/ Metal, not only by their music, but most definitely by the way they look as well. While looking at the cover of their latest release, entitled Sturm aufs Paradies, they're giving it a hell of a try to introduce their music in France as well. The cover namely represents an interpretation of the famous French painting La liberté guidant le peuple showing an important French revolution, only with the guys of Saltatio Mortis leading it.

The band was formed in 2000 and with Sturm aufs Paradies they're up to their eighth full length album already. One prior warning: all songs are in German. Don't let that frighten you however, beacuse the medieval style the songs have been written in make it all that much more interesting. The first song "Habgier Und Tod" starts in quite an odd way (it makes me think of Lord of the Dance at certain times). Fortunately however, it develops into something quite special. The main theme on Sturm aufs Paradies? Can't you guess it already? Battle (of course)! The whole pachake is all in all quite bombastic and the medieval and traditional instruments, such as the pipes give this album its extra medieval touch. According to me, it's outdone from time to tiume. Some songs tend to fall into repetition, but it are the medieval insertions that make it more alive. After a while though, the pipes really start to get on your nerves which doesn't leave your index finger too far away from the 'skip' button.

All in all, with Sturm aufs Paradies, Saltatio Mortis created a decent album. However, for the next album they should cut down on the pipes and focus on the melodies and metal sound of their songs, avoiding a feeling of constant repetition.

80/100
