Review: CD

Iskald are a Norwegian duo (Simon Larsen and Aage Andre Krekling), formed in 2005. That very same year, a first demo was recorded, and in 2006, after the self-release of the mini-album Northern Twilight, Iskald recorded their debut full length, Shades Of Misery, which was produced by Nils Johansson. Current label Indie Recordings re-issued this debut, with different artwork. Through this label, Iskald released the album Revelations Of Reckoning in 2008 as well, and now it’s time for the third full-album, The Sun I Carried Alone. It has been recorded again at 210 Studios (Berlin, Germany), like the former one.

The Sun I Carried Alone has something of both former albums, and at the same time it did progress a little as well. What’s for sure is this: this is a product from Norway. This is the kind of Black Metal that combines epic with precision, progression with tradition, and intensity with melody. It is a journey over icy Nordic battlefields. And Iskald do it with persuasion and grandeur. But…The Sun I Carried Alone has been recorded a hundred times before. Everything fits, that’s right, but unfortunately this album does not exceed the grey masses. Yes, there’s a lot worse coming out lately, but I’ve heard more convincing releases as well. Don’t get me wrong, because the performance is splendid, the sound is massive, the atmosphere is grabbing etc…

I just miss something, and I can’t find it whole the time…

80/100
