Band : Long Distance Calling Succeeding two full-length albums (2007’s Satellite Bay and 2009’s Avoid The Light)the band’s third self titled effort is a moody, hard-hitting and altogether exemplary piece of instrumental post metal. Influenced by bands like Tool, Pelican, My Sleeping Karma, Mogwai and Pink Floyd, Long Distance Calling, who have been around in one form or another since 2006, does a commendable job of melding styles without ever sounding like a copycat or rip-off artist. Odd-time signatures, intricate drum work, and groove-trance breaks amass Long Distance Calling from beginning to end. They have changed the musical concept a bit compared to how they sounded on Avoid The Light, as their third oozes more of a crunchy metal sound along with strokes of heavy riffing and ambient soundscapes.. Avoid The Light featured Jonas Renske (Katatonia) on one song, and now we have one of my favourite metal performers all time, mr John Bush from Armored Saint/Anthrax and he does a splendid job on a hybrid of grunge/post rock riffing of “Middleville”. They sound more mature on this album and they have developed their sound in just the right way. LDC keeps things unpredictable with an interesting assemblage of light/dark theme structures. 92/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
