Review: CD

Maim were formed in 2006 and released a first album, From The Womb To The  Tomb, in 2009 through Soulseller Records. The quartet recently finished the recordings of the sophomore album.

Maim are such a band that makes part of the resurrected Old School Death Metal scene. Resurrected was written in italic on purpose, because the Old School scene never faded away completely. Nowadays we just get overloaded with new releases from both old and new bands, and not all of them succeed. In Maim’s case it’s somewhat doubtful. When it comes to originality: zero points. But many bands prove that it is not obligatory to renew. But those bands create interesting songs. Maim sometimes do, sometimes they don’t. however, and that’s very important: Maim aren’t just a ‘Swedish scene’-clone. Of course the members’ natural roots gave a certain orientation to the music they perform, and one cannot deny the influences from acts like Grave, Dismember, Nihilist or Repugnant. Luckily, most of these Swedish-sounding parts are all right. The band finds its inspiration in the US-scene as well. Autopsy, Abscess, Repulsion, Headrot, it’s just a selection of names that come to mind.

Not every minute is as interesting, but I need to say that this album, globally seen, is not that bad at all. It does not reach the level of most higher mentioned bands, yet I will never dislike listening to it.
