Review: EP
Dragon Eye Morrison started in 2003 as a duo and did release some rare yet interesting EP’s before. To fill the gap between the Drama-EP (2009) and the upcoming full length (later this year or early 2012?), this three-tracker will please all fans; and with PHD taking care of the worldwide distribution, this might be an enormous introduction to future fans.
The three tracks (sixteen minutes) on The Kodiak (named after the Alaskan island which is known for its oil exploitation as well as the biggest but one sort of bear, the Kodiak bear – sub-species of the brown bear, by the way) form a small concept, chronicling the tribulations of some primitive tribe, seeking reason and revenge for the passing of the tribe’s members. Nature versus men, if you want to…
The quartet’s music (Adam Hatton-v, g; Adam Rockett-d; Kyle Bunkin-b; and Paul Hovey-g) stands for a Hardcore- and Sludge-injected form of both modern-sounding and, at the same time, retro-inspired Groove Metal. The band has an own sound and performs with proper characteristics, yet without ignoring the fundamental and essential specifications of the genre. Dragon Eye Morrison’s somewhat eccentric interpretation reminds me to a Mastodon-meet-Baroness-alike marriage, yet the alternative approach overpowers this comparison.
Fans must look out for the upcoming album!
