Band : Shining I wasn’t expecting a lot from this Swedish band when I put in the CD, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. Though I haven’t heard of them before now, Shining are definitely a band I’d be interested in hearing more from. VII : Född Förlorare is my first meeting with this interesting band, and this is one of those records that might take a while to fully appreciate. Shining (don’t mix em with the Norwegian avantgarde jazz metal band Shining) offer the listener an amazing nightmare into melodic complex soundscapes, mixing old and new sorts of music. The album's strong force is to provide a black/thrash/gothic mixture that gives a feeling of harmony, yet with a complex and progressive edge, but most importantly, almost impossible to predict. The evil forces on this album is the high technical abilities of the band members as well as the use of so many different elements and sounds woven together like a mosaic of sound. Few can do that. The use of ebony and ivory parts is also done with good taste, without exaggerating their presence too much as a part of other instruments, The first tracks contain several pounding, relentless, never-give-up riffs that mesh perfectly with anguished vocals and apocalyptic drumming. The track sets the stage perfectly for the rest of the album, which never falters in its frenetic energy. If you take your time to get into this, the newest by Shining will provide a long time of listening enjoyment without ever getting boring. 93/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
