In February of 2011, the Americans of Symphony X were the headlining band of the Power of Metal Tour, crossing Europe and leaving traces of destruction in every country they had been. At that time, Iconoclast, the new studio album of this progressive metal band, was still waiting to be released. Now, finally, we have the opportunity to discover what the band's eighth album is all about. Fortunately, it was worth the long four-year-wait. It immediately becomes clear that Symphony X decided to cut down on the progressive parts in favour of the bone hard metal that is put to the foreground. In this way, Iconoclast can be described as an impressive, ear blasting metal album. From the ten-minute-long opening title track till the very last notes of Prometheus we are subjected to the amazing acting of Symphony X and most of all, the surprisingly strong voice of Russell Allen. After listening to this album, there's only one feeling that other bands can have: a damned feeling of pressure resting on their shoulders, because it will be super hard to outdo this outstanding piece of metal. Another beautiful element of this album, is the perfect harmony between the choirs and the hard parts of every songs. All this heaviness is calmed down with an enchanting ballad to end up Iconoclast. It goes without saying that All is Lost is a wonderful song and a perfect rest, but maybe it would have been better to put this somewhere in the middle of the album? Just an idea, because there are really no remarks to come up with whatsoever when it comes to the mastering of the songs.
With Iconoclast, Symphony X have come up with one of the best metal albums of the year, without any possible doubt!
