Review : CD
Voodoo Boogie is a quartet from Limburg, Belgium who play a style of delta blues rock that blends psych, soul, funk, and latin, but has a clear rhythmic sense as well. This Ol’ Storm is the bands second CD, the first released on REmusic.
“Takin me home”, “Rain keep fallin’” and “Reconsider” are solid songs with very good vocals and overall bears a strong resemblance to De Wolff and Triggerfinger..Gert Servaes measured and varied drumming sets the pace and joins Wouter Haest’s keyboards in carrying the compositions through twists and turns. I like the trippier atmosphere and the best parts are when the keys and guitar play its melodic solos while the percussion run through a parade of sounds that serve as much of an instrumental role as it does rhythmic. Via songs like the more bluesy opener “Got to get out”, the six minutes clocking, very latin and catchy one instrumental “Alhambra” and via the De Wolff sounding one “Takin me home” it is also easy to hear that the rest of the band knows how to play their songs decently as well. So far there is enough to enjoy again. But there are unfortunately also a couple of songs on This Ol’ Storm which temper my interest a bit. A song like “Summer calling” and “The end of my day” are a bit too cliché and “Sign my guitar” and “Electric Kissing” are too winy, mostly because of their wimpy Prince-like vocals..
In summary, I enjoyed This Ol’ Storm, though I only found about half of it really memorable.
80/100
