| CD REVIEW The Magnificent Brotherhood |

Band : The Magnificent Brotherhood Apparently containing Kiryk Drewinski : lead & backing vocals- guitars, Erik Haegert : lead & backing vocals-farfisa-compact organ , Jan Rohrbach : bass guitar and Lars Puder : drums & backing vocals, all veterans of German’s psych rock scene, The Magnificent Brotherhood get a perfectly nice 60s rock-surf psych feel, lovely arrangements with lots of well-placed organ and jangly 6-string guitars. But the first time I listened to it, I was a little underwhelmed, but repeated playing rewards the listener. Clearly not the year's most innovative album, there are still numerous tracks worth hearing. To my ears the highlights included "Divine advice”, "Last song about you" and their most psych-oriented track "Upside down”. And while the songs are all pretty good, they lack that extra step that would take them toward greatness. A little more creativity might have helped: a wild guitar solo, unexpected tempo changes, blazing horns, longer songs, frenetic jams,… So, while Dope Idiots show plenty of promise, this album is missing spark and intrigue. 75/100 Cosmicmasseur. |
