Band : Rones Yea-ah...a new one by Belgian oddity The Rones, now simply named Rones! Enthoused reaction from my part, because I really am into oddities, and Rones' “Industrial Stoner Rock” can surely be counted among the stranger kinds of music I've been honoured to listen to in the last couple of years. For those interested in the band's history up to late last year, I touched on that in my review of the band's official debut album Sinner Songs (posted 08/11/2010), which was re-issued late last year...probably in part to already get the band in the media's attention again. Weirdly enough, there's no new info on the band at the label's website, and on the band's own website the only info you'll find is about the release date and the fact that you can/ could win a copy of the album for free, providing you would promote (a alternate way for “selling a certain amount of copies”) the album. So, all I'm left with is the info in the album's booklet, which learns us that, for the recordings of their sophomore full-length the band first recorded the live drums at Brussel's renowned IPC studio, then convened at Loppem based At The Globe Recording Studios, where Rones' main lyricist and lead singer (guitarist & electronics handler as well) co-produced the 12 tracks on Rones in collaboration with Belgian high quality producer Ace Tec. As could be expected from this band, there's a couple of wacky moments, like the use of horns on the tracks “Bribe” and “Leftover” (incidentally? put right after each other on the track-list), and the added strings (actual violins, viola, and cello) on the tracks “Mind Eraser” and album closer “Resumé”. Also, female vocals were added to no less than 3 songs (“Leonard/ Leopard”, “Break”, and “Resumé”, all 3 in the latter part of the album, by the way!). Of course, all of you people who've already come in contact with this band's music have nothing to fear, and already have an idea of what's to be expected, but those among you who belong among the eternal doubters, or those not having come in contact with the band yet, are hereby suggested to have a listen to the songs (4 album songs and 6 remixes) posted at (www.) soundcloud.com/ronesmusic. Combined with what's posted at the band's own (www.) therones.be, that gives you a total of 6 songs off the new album (for older material, check the band's page at Last.fmor MySpace. Meanwhile, I'm happy enough to call this promo copy my own, so I can listen to it whenever it fancies me! Need you ask whether I like? And of course this one gets into my 2011 year-lists!!! 98/100 Tony. |
