Mehtnakriss are a Death Metal band from the south of France, which were formed five years ago. Their self-released 2009-MCD 14810252112119129 did not reach the worldwide audience, but this first full length will put this band on the international Death-map.
A Grey Moment lasts for fifty minutes and brings straight European Death Metal with some specific Gothenburg-alike influences. The melodic songs are surprisingly technically performed in all aspects: the riffs, solos and back sessions, as well as the variety within the compositions (tempo and song structure). Most of the time, A Grey Moment is thrashing, kinetic and pushing, which seems to be a unique contrast with the melodic approach.
A few times, the band uses electronics, some parts are almost grindingly blasting, and the eruptional energy cannot be laughed away.
However, it is not the lack of originality that bothers me this time. What irritates me is the passé-feeling I get. This is not ‘retro’, this is not ‘traditional’, but it is totally uninspired. Nothing more than that.  It’s a pity, because the song writing and performance are all right. We have the ingredients, but not the right cook to create perfection. …yet?...
