Review: CD

Finnr’s Cane are a rather unusual Canadian trio. This ‘unusual’ has to do with two aspects. First of all, their adventurous compositions aren’t time-intensively well-thought creations, yet they are written and interpreted by / with intuition and improvisation. And secondly, they do not use bass guitars, yet cello instead. Besides, this is a band that uses lots of acoustic and semi-acoustic elements, much more than we’re used to.
This debut full length lasts for forty eight minutes and combines two genres, which both are related en often getting used together: Post-Rock and (Black) Metal. Or: Prophecy and its sub-divisions seem to have a patent for this music(k)al marriage. The instrumental intro The Healer gives a first glimpse, and as from Snowfall on: Prophecy indeed. Nostalgic and melancholic (Black) Metal from the Abyss versus (semi-) acoustic Rock passages with both emotive and creative spheres; obscurity with intelligence, Doom and Darkness, bleakness versus the heath of winter…
